Starting in a brand new indoor pool and expanding all the way to the Pacific ocean, I have made waves both literally and metaphorically in every place I have taught. From adopting newer and better coaching styles and drills to developing my own curriculum, swim has been a part of my life since I could remember. Life guarding, competitive swim, coaching anyone from children to the elderly, I have seen most all facets of swim.

Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, I grew up in the water. Floating the river, neighborhood pools, and rope swings are some of the favorite activities in a young Idahoan’s summer. Starting at the age of seven and spanning until I started high school, I swam for Borah Pool’s competitive team. Front Crawl and Butterfly were my go-to strokes, and I looked forward to the weekly meets to test my skills.

After graduating from summer team to Life guarding, I donned the red suit anywhere from country clubs to the Puget Sound on a sail boat. One day I hope to retire in a place where I can put around on such a wind powered vehicle, but a sailor once told me there are only two happy days in a sailor’s life; the day they buy their boat, and the day they sell it.

I found my love of coaching while working with kids on their deep water fear and basic stroke form. Teaching children has taught me to cherish victories and the importance of a deep (seemingly bottomless) patience. Over time, I learned the importance of a strong foundation and the mechanics of swim. As I have developed an understanding for these things, I have gravitated more to adult lessons and the dialogue they present. However, each age group presents as many blessings as challenges. I love the conversation and the comprehension with adults, but I will always appreciate the pureness and the joy of a kid learning to love the water for the first time. There is value in both.

Swim can both challenge you physically and mentally to the point you think you can go no further, but it can also take you to heights you never thought you could reach.
